Daisy’s Determination – Designed One Day at a Time

This spotlight is on Daisy I. as part of my celebration of the movers and shakers that make progress happen.

Daisy is a popular name for great women, films, songs, software, and even places (see here).  But did you know that the name Daisy comes from an Old English word, dægesege, which means “day’s eye”?  The concept of “day’s eye” came about because the petals of the daisy flower open at dawn and close at dusk (see here).  In essence, by watching the daisy flower, you can track the progress of your life, one day at a time.

Determination happens in your life when you come up with a purpose for doing something and then use that purpose as a guide to get it done.  This understanding of determination is particularly important to the creative process of life.  When you imagine how a sketch drawing becomes a multi-colored painting or how two spools of thread turn into a full outfit, what you are really imagining is determination.  A world without creative minds is a world with a little less determination.

Daisy’s Determination is a creative process that combines the concept of “day’s eye” with the understanding of determination.  The process happens when you come up with a purpose to get things done and then use that purpose as a guide to get them done, one day at a time.  This creative process is how one artist/entrepreneur has met excellence in the development of her business.  Meet Daisy Iwuagwu.

I had the opportunity to interview Daisy for this month’s spotlight.  Daisy I. studies at the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) in San Antonio, Texas.  She specializes in Fashion Design and Merchandising.  Art has always been Daisy’s passion, and in many ways, she has built her passion into a career.  “I love drawing. It has always been my passion ever since I was young. I don’t remember how old I was exactly when I started but I do remember putting together pieces of paper that were cut out and I would staple them together and give it to my father and he loved it and encouraged me,” said Daisy.

Daisy’s projects include drawing, painting, writing comics, designing hats, crafting and molding clay figures, and much more.  Her other categories of expertise consist of pencil line, inked line, digital screentone, comic page, and custom fashion designs.

What people find fascinating about Daisy’s projects is how she keeps it all together with perspective and purpose.  For example, her comics have been well received by the elusive 15-25 year old demographic, many of whom also purchase her fashionable hats designed with themes that connect to her comic writing.  “I don’t do it all in one day… one day at a time, that’s how I get it all done,” she says.
